Hormones

At certain times of the year, your parrot will get hormonal. They will be frisky, agitated and aggressive.

There are ways to deal with it - ignore it. That's right! This is their natural behaviour, just let them go about their business and close your eyes.

At this time, don't pet their backs, this stimulates them. Limit starch and sugar in their diet at this time, including corn and grapes.

We need to limit our physical touch during this time. Our petting and stroking can stimulate their hormones. You need to rub their head and the back of their neck.

Aly went through a hormonal phase where she would coo when you scritched her. She would also stick her bum in your face.

Don't worry. It won't last forever, just give them time and space.

Some Hormonal Triggers to Avoid

Cuddling and petting, especially their back, tail and around their veny. Do not pull on the tail. Foods can be a trigger as already mentioned.
Sugar, starch, corn, wheat germ, help seed, spirulina.  Give less protein and less soft foods. If a female , give her anything that would make a good nest area.  Dark corners or boxes.  Possible nesting materials.  Keep her off the floor.

Some Things That Can Help Are:

More exercise.
Distraction.
Trick training or clicker training.
Change of scenery.
Rearrange the cage or entire room.
New interesting toys, swings, boings, safe tree branches.
Foraging toys where she has to work for her food.
Hang up a book for her to chew on (take the shiny pages out first).
Let her watch TV, a car ride, visit a friend, etc.
All activity should be oriented toward fun or learning.
Play games, etc. More sleep.  Less sun/light hours.
